Winter ProjectMichael Adam StroudJun 241 min readWinter was a good time to built the chicken coop that we wanted to raise chickens in so we can give out eggs to those in need. This coop will house 50 chickens with 10 laying boxes for eggs. It has outside door for easy access to the eggs. The chicken coop is next to the solar shed that will provide electricity for the winter months when we need a heat lamp to keep the girls warm.Mike quickly learned how to dig a trench with our son-in-law's mini excavator.Mike did a pretty good job for a first timer on digging a trench!Cement block instead of a solid footing saved quite a bit of construction costs. The lonely coop is now getting a 40 foot by 8 foot run attached to it to provide a nice enclosure for the chickens to keep safe from predators.A crew of volunteers leveled the inside of the coop and filled in the trenches with dirt.Adding a weed barrier onto of wire ground cloth and then a layer of gravel on top of that to keep predators from digging under the foundation. The construction workers put up the wire fencing before we got it spray painted so now we have to paint it by hand.Almost finished. Next comes the watering system, feeder, ladder for the chickens to get into their coop and then baby chicks!
